Not a venerated pre-WWII but it does lack the somewhat debated Acton vent, and its 150xxx serial probably dates it to around 1958. High overtones are more like whistling through the sax than anything else. Personally I think working on altissimo IF you use it is a good idea, and the first 3-4 overtones are useful, but getting a million overtones is just a party trick.

From a strictly tonal point of view, alto sax is closer to trumpet than tenor sax. From a playing point of view, tenor sax is the most flexible. Of the players you listed, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon and Charlie Rouse play tenor, the others are on alto.

The only big difference I can see between the S and S+ is the chamber. As far as sound, the S+ definitely has more body in the tone to my ears, mainly in the upper range and altissimo.
